What the repositioning of the speakers does is that the bottle holders on the door have now become sizeable to even hold one of your two litre bottles without any fuss. The car also gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It has taken the speakers from the doors and put it in the dashboard along with the aircon system. This is where Volvo has done something unique. While you do miss the superlative sound of the Bowers and Wilkins, the Harman does a more than good job with the sound quality. The XC40 gets a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, unlike the Bowers and Wilkins found in the larger XCs. In the end it becomes as easy as working on a Tablet. Once you are familiarised, the system is very intuitive and controls just about every function of the car. If you have been inside a new Volvo, you will be used to the infotainment system, but in case you are not familiar, it should take you about 10 minutes to get used to it. It gets a large panoramic sunroof, but it does borrow stuff from its larger siblings like the steering wheel, the digital instrument cluster and the 9.0-inch vertical touchscreen Sensus infotainment system. Much like every Volvo on the road today, the XC 40 is minimal, but beautifully designed and feels quite spacious. How does it look? Personally, I think it is very different, and Volvo has been largely successful in its bold experiment. As soon as you open the door you will be greeted by the orange floors and orange inserts on a large part of the door. The XC40 has an all-black interior and what they call as lava orange. This is where the car gets very interesting. The treatment is nice and clean, the dual exhaust and the body claddings give it a sporty look and the car looks very good even from the rear. At the rear, the vertically-shaped LED tail-lights are typical Volvo but very distinct from the XC60 and the 90.
